West Bijou Ranch was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service in 2016. West Bijou is a large intact representation of the Central Shortgrass Prairie with open, non-obstructed views, and outcroppings of the KT Boundary, a geologic site showing the layers of the earth before and after dinosaurs were present. According to the National Park Service, "With a rich fossil record, this 7,613-acre site provides critical information for understanding the timescale of all of Earth’s history."
